Parchment

A thin skin used for covering tympans, both inner and outer, by reason of its toughness and durability. Old deeds, leases, &c., are frequently used for economy sake. A good skin is free from imperfections or cuts, and is of uniform thick-ness throughout. The outer tympan may be a little thicker than the inner one.—See Tympans.
