A sign used to inclose interpolated words or sentences, which serve to strengthen the arguments, though the same sentence would read correctly were the enclosed matter taken away. Parentheses are not now so frequently used as formerly, as commas serve the same purpose and are neater in appearance.—See Punctuation.
