American Tapir

Tapirus Americanus

The largest quadruped in South America, the American Tapir ranges over the continent east of the Andes, reaching five to six feet in length, powerfully formed and clothed in scanty deep brown hair with a bristly mane upon the neck. The lower lip sides, chin, ear edges and hoof junctions are pure white, the young lighter and spotted, and its remarkably thick skin, hunted for hide and flesh, lets it make stubbornly for water when pursued.
