Illustrations

Browse 1,347 hand-drawn illustrations of birds, mammals, insects, and fish included across the 40 volumes of The Naturalist’s Library.

The illustrations in The Naturalist’s Library were created using steel engravings that were then hand-colored. Steel was used over the traditional copper to achieve a finer line and greater detail on the small pages, measuring only four by six inches. Following the engraving process, the prints were painstakingly colored by hand before publication to provide accurate and vibrant representations of the animals, a feature that contributed greatly to the series’ immense popularity.

Each illustration has been restored to its original vibrancy and is available for free download in high resolution with no restrictions on use.
