Orange Legged Falcon
Falco rufipes
Recently found as a rare straggler in England and Ireland, this small falcon is also scarce on the adjacent Continent, becoming common only eastward in Russia, and favours wild mountainous wooded country. Its food appears almost entirely insectivorous, with reptiles also taken; the adult male is uniform blackish grey with chestnut thighs and clear reddish orange legs, the female dark reddish brown headed and barred on the tail, scarcely larger than the Merlin.
