Charaxes Jasius

The most beautiful European butterfly, varying from three to four inches across, the surface rich silky brown with a broad fulvous band along the forewing margin and a fulvous transverse band beyond the middle, the hindwings with a posterior band of fulvous and bluish-green spots and two tails. Beneath it is richly mottled rust-red, olive, and white with a satiny band, the yellow-horned caterpillar feeding nightly on the strawberry tree; it occurs in southern France, Italy, Sicily, and Asia Minor.
