Volume 11, Plate XXIX / Mammalia (Mammals)
Pallah
A. melampus
Inhabiting the interior of Caffraria and the Booshowana country, the Pallah retains lyrate horns and appears only in small flocks. Standing about three feet at the shoulder and five feet long, it is reddish or yellowish-brown above, sometimes with a deeper dorsal streak, and white on breast, belly, and inner legs, with light fawn about the muzzle and eyes; a black spot marks each leg above the spurious hoof, and it is easily tamed yet very timid and swift.
