Kahau or Proboscis Monkey

Nasalis larvatus

A native of Borneo and still rare in collections, this monkey is at once known by its grotesque nose nearly four inches long, with an unshapely reddish-brown body protruding in front, long arms, a lengthened tail, naked callosities, and a large guttural sack. Standing about three feet erect, it is gregarious, assembling in large troops upon riverside trees at sunrise and sunset, darting fifteen to twenty feet between branches and uttering continued cries.
