Common Wolf

Lupus vulgaris

The common wolf of Western Europe stands twenty-seven to twenty-nine inches at the shoulder, fulvous grey on head, neck, and back, with longer throat hairs forming a protective mane, a black muzzle, white upper lip and chin, and ochry limbs banded at the wrists. Regional races vary, the Russian larger and coarser, the northern whiter and wholly white in winter, the Italian and Asiatic kinds fulvous and redder.
