The Boar-Hound of Germany, likely the true Molossian of antiquity, ranks among the largest breeds, full in the mouth, fierce, coarse, and rugged in fur, invariably seen with cropped ears and a rough straggling tail. Tan coloured with dark brown or blackish surfaces on back, shoulders, and ears, some attained nearly four feet at the shoulder, rivalling Shetland ponies, and were employed by Turkish soldiers to guard outposts and later kept as regimental pets.
