Canis Alco

• The Alco (left). The Alco is a small Mexican dog, long imperfectly known, kept as a lapdog by the women yet occasionally returning to independence, its colours given as white and yellow or white and black with rufous spots above the eyes. A figured specimen was small with a large head, elongated occiput, full muzzle, pendulous ears, and long soft hair, white but for a black spot over each ear and forehead and a black spot on the rump.
• The Techichi of Mexico, or the Carrier-Dog of the Indians (right). The Techichi of Mexico, or carrier-dog of the Indians, was seen only once, a long-backed, heavy-looking animal with a terrier’s mouth, tail, and colours, though its hair was scantier and smoother and its ears cropped. To this race belongs the carrier Indian dog noted by Richardson, having a long body, comparatively short but unbent legs, and short hair that is not woolly.
