Great Mastodon

Resembling the Elephant in tusks and osteology save for its mammillary grinders, the great Mastodon of the Ohio stood no taller but was of larger form, with thicker limbs and a less capacious belly, and probably bore a trunk. Its remains abound across North America, fresher than other fossil bones, and from enclosed branches, grasses, and leaves it appears to have fed on roots and fleshy vegetable parts in soft, marshy ground.
