Volume 13, Plate IV / Mammalia (Mammals)
Elephant of Africa
Elephas Africanus
Larger eared and more rounded of head than its Asiatic kin, the African Elephant carries lozenge crowned cheek teeth and ears so vast they cover the shoulders, its skin and scanty hair little differing in colour. Ranging from the Cape of Good Hope to the Niger, it goes in watchful herds near water and shade, fiercely defending its young, and has scarcely been tamed, being hunted for sport or profit.
