The setter, a sporting dog distinguished by long silky hair and reckoned a larger spaniel of Spanish origin, shows a marked development of brain and a matching intelligence, affection, and docility unequalled among dogs, somewhat timid yet bearing fatigue better than the pointer. Partaking of pointer and spaniel in figure, its older colours were deep chestnut and white or wholly red, while in England it is white with black or brown marks; the least adulterated breeds remain in Ireland.
