Barred-Tailed Pheasant

Phasianus superbus

Remarkable above all for the extraordinary length of its tail, whose longest feather exceeds four feet, this splendid pheasant inhabits the snowy mountains of China and is kept in the menageries of the wealthy at Pekin. It bears a white cowl ringed with black, two white collars, scaled golden-yellow feathers tipped with black, and white underparts crossed by black bands, the long folded tail barred with chestnut and brown.
