White-Collared Humming-Bird

Trochilus mellivorus

Common in collections and one of the oldest known, this species changes greatly from youth to age, the adult male a deep fine blue on crown, cheeks, and breast, golden green on the back, and marked on the nape with a crescent of the purest white. Its broad tail feathers are white tipped with black; found from Cayenne to the West Indies, it haunts low marshy ground among plantain bushes.
