Red or Meadow Vole
Arvicola pratensis
Closely allied to the water vole but considerably smaller, resembling the field vole in form yet with proportionally longer tail, the soft rather long fur bright chestnut-red above, yellowish-grey on the sides, and cream-coloured beneath, the feet and lower tail yellowish-white. First discovered in England by Mr Yarrell from Essex, it has since been found in several English counties and in Scotland near Bathgate, Kelso, and elsewhere.
