Spotted Elephant Hawk-Moth
Deilephila Euphorbiæ
The dusky-green forewings expand two and a half to nearly three inches, crossed obliquely by a broad rosy fascia with the inner margin edged white, the red hinder wings inclining to rose with a white anal mark and black base and band. The mature caterpillar is black with white points and three rows of side spots, feeding on cypress spurge and sea spurge, this rare and local insect chiefly procured among the sand-hills near Barnstaple in Devonshire.
