Common Jackal

Sacalius aureus

The common jackal bears more the aspect of a diminutive wolf than a fox, higher and erect on the legs with a broad dog-like nose, rufous and ashy-grey black-tipped hairs, black whiskers, rufous ears white within, yellowish-grey neck and back, and rufous-red shoulders. Its straight brushy tail appears black at the end, the under coat woolly grey, and it ranges over northern Persia, southern Russia, and Natolia.
