Congo Duaw, or Zebra of Pigafetta

Hippotigris antiquorum

Possibly only a variety of the Cape Dauw but kept separate, this Congo species is white with a faint yellow tinge, the most elegant of the whole group, with open white-tipped ears, black mouth and nostrils, and an equine white tail often tinged rufous. Its stripes, fewer and more scattered than the Zebra’s, reach to the knees and hocks; ranging along West Africa, it was once so unalarmed by gunfire that several were shot while others stood by.
